2008 JKU "Argenta" Build Thread (plus an Islander side project)

I am not sure with the Hemi but I removed the EVAP canister completely. It's not needed in the LS Swap.

For sake of emissions compliance (now and in the future), and not wanting to deal with fuel vapor smells in the garage, I'm retaining the EVAP for sure. This is actually quite an easy process as the JSS Swap Kit integrates the EVAP control into their kit.

I forgot you are in a state that has emissions testing/state inspection. I actually do not get any vapor smells in the garage......because my wife keeps her vehicle and the golf cart in there. If I have my toys at home they say in the driveway.

I went with the MetalCloak Aluminum Fender Flares. They are SOOOOOO light!

I've thought about them - I have used MC flares is in the past and loved the quality (though the powdercoat does leave a little to be desired). I really like the thought of using aluminum though something simple like the KBD flares are also quite appealing.

I picked up a cheap set of Bushwhacker Flat Flares a while ago, but something about them kinda irks me at times. Sometimes I think they look great, then sometimes I think they look like batwings flying through the air... I don't know - I may just install them to get them out of my way and give me something in the short term, but long term I may still find a different option. I do want to go with some aluminum inners and want to pick up some on a Christmas Sale, though I wish there was a nice option without a STUPID F&*$%# LOGO ON THEM!!!! Seriously, for any company making Jeep products out there that read this - don't put your stupid looking logo on your parts, or at least offer a logo-less option. I don't need a giant "A", "MC", or whatever on any part on my Jeep.. ever. Like, never, ever...

I had a set that looked like bat wings. If I could go back now I would go with the smaller ones or just delete them. MetalCloak is having a pretty large sale, but they are still not cheap, plus they want +221 for the power coating, But it is a very good powder coating and has held up very well.

As a full time Environmental Compliance Manager, I will say that eliminating EVAP is a violation of federal standards, but will leave it at that :)

At the state level, you can usually get away with a lot, though I am always reminded of when I lived in Arizona. The state was known for having zero emissions testing and many Californian hot-rodders would get a PO Box or use a friend/family members address for registration. Then, when Maricopa and Pima Counties were having non-attainment issues and faced losing their federal highway funding, they implemented some heavy requirements.

I had just put a big-block into a D200 Dodge project I was working on and got the notice in the mail saying that as a Pinal County resident, I was now required to get emissions tested as well. There was no way my truck was going to pass the emissions inspection (it did not have the OEM air pump and EGR, so would automatically fail), even though it would have passed the roller test. I sold it to a guy who lived outside the area and wouldn't have to worry about it. There was some getting around the testing requirements for a while (using a PO box for example), but the ADEQ got smart to that and would require a physical address on all registrations. Unless you knew someone who could send you mail from their out-of-range location, it became harder and harder.

Even when you tried to comply, like in the case of my YJ, you often had to deal with some nonsense. My YJ had low miles, a perfectly running 4.0L, and a brand new cat, but every now and then, one of the guys running it on the rollers would fail the test because he missed the up or downshifts, which would cause him to lug or overrev and throw off the results (it was quite a narrow window!). There were at least two times that I ended up doing the "driving" during the IM147 roller emissions testing because the person didn't know how to properly shift...

Thankfully in PA it's just an equipment visual and simple OBD-II check. As long as you have the necessary equipment (cats) and your CEL works but is not on when the engine is running, and your gas cap passes the test, you're good to go.

I've had two sets of MC flares with MC powder coating... in both cases, they developed a small rust line where the tub meets the flat steel section of the flare. Granted, these were the steel versions. If I went with the MC flares this time, they would absolutely be aluminum...

This always annoyed me and is the primary reason (besides that I genuinely like how they look) that I went with thermoplastic MCE fenders. I left my inner fenders off but I do have a set of aluminum ones that are unbranded and don't have stupid shit like flag or skull designs on it.

Which ones did you go with?? I can't seem to find a set I like that don't make me look like some Truck-Nutz sporting d-bag... :ROFLMAO:

I have been looking at these, but they're expensive for what they are, and I still can't figure out who actually makes them: https://www.extremeterrain.com/jeep...kit-bare-metal-j0054407.html#customer_reviews

Honestly? Some cheap shit chinesium off eBay that was probably like $40 shipped. It's just an aluminum plate to cover a hole, didn't need anything fancy.

E: am I reading that right? $670 dollars?!?

Well I did not put CATS back on after the swap. I know its not great for the environment that way. Here in SC there is no inspection or emissions. If you run into the wrong police officer they can give your vehicle and "inspection" if you get pulled over for another offense.
