I've thought about that too, I wonder what would happen if I accidentally turned on both at the same time? So if I buy a on-off-on switch how would I wire that up? I haven't even ordered the lights yet and from the looks of things they are on a 30 day backorder; so I have some time for research.

I think it is the same distance, it's just not at a true 90 degree angle, it's just slightly "twisted" enough that it won't allow the D-Ring pin to align properly when pushed through. I haven't taken any measurements though.
