Looking to change fluids. For the rear differential the owners manual says “models equipped with Trac-Loc” require an additive. The build sheet shows “Command-Trac Shift-on-the-Fly 4WD”, I have a few questions listed below.

Jeep is 2007 Sahara, 3.8L, automatic transmission, 3.73 gears.

1. Is command-trac the same as Trac-Loc?
2. If so is the additive required regardless of towing status?
3. What is the additive required? The OM doesn’t say, just says additive, unless they are referring to it being “synthetic”.
4. I suppose you could use the fluid recommended for trailer towing even if you don’t tow very often?

Trac-Loc is a limited slip essentially. You will need the additive.

You can find a gear oil with it already added in..

But, on your rubi, DO NOT use a additive.

@IndominusHuman thank you. It’s for my son’s 2007 Sahara not my Rubi. We don’t have the window sticker, just the build sheet and wasn’t sure if Command-Trac was the same thing as trac-loc.

I see I actually mixed up the post with the transfer case, separate issue from the rear end. Rear end is Conventional Rear Axle.
