What Is This Vent On My Tailgate?

Relocating the license plate from where the previous owner had it on the tailgate to where it was originally. Taking off some brackets from where the plate was mounted and I found this....vent? ...or something. Anybody tell me what it's for?

OK, so I finally got around to googling this. Apparently it is a vent. To equalize air pressure when you’ve got the air conditioner on, etc. What confuses me is it's solid metal on the inside of the tailgate, so I don’t see how the air can actually get through the vent.

Also, it’s probably not even needed on a soft top Jeep because there’s so many places for the air to escape anyway.

The vent is there so you don't have to hook a hose up to the tailpipe and run it up to the cabin when your Jeep has gotten the better of you. See, if you just sit in one spot idling, the exhaust fumes find their way up to you. Same if you are driving down a dirty, dusty road, the aerodynamics draws all that stuff back into the cabin.

It looks like your vent is missing the flaps . The back of my Jeep would get dusty after a day on the trails . After replacing with new vent that had the flaps . Stopped the dust problem .
It’s kinda there for a reason as @BLACKJKU said literally have to slam the door to get it closed properly if vent removed .

I leave my windows cracked a we bit for the bars, have those rain guards. And in the winter, once I get going they are always frozen stuck. Breezy on the ears at -25C. All Good

Why not just replace the vent so you don’t freeze in the winter with frozen open windows
