Overheating

Hi all! Last few days I’ve overheated twice. Both times we were up and running for a few days, cold air, then room temp air started blowing, needle going up, and coolant overflow bubbling. Relatively new cooling fan. Replaced the thermostat and fan relay. Finally figured out the issue. The wiring seems to be wonky. Any time we tap the wire out of place, fan shuts off and won’t turn back on. We zip tied it in place for now, but wanted to see if anyone else ran into this issue. I’m finding SUCH limited information on it. Anything that I am seeing as far as replacement goes online, doesn’t seem to be in stock. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Wiring is essentially topic all in itself, the specific wire that is loose will probably be hard to track a video for.

That being said, the method is to track to the location that is causing the problem. Either while running with the tap / tug on the wires to walk back to the location, or with a continuity tester.

Once you find the bad connection, you fix it. Either with solder or a new wire.. and probably solder. Or tighten the bolt, screw, nut.

What you are describing is not a fix, but a band-aid. Ensuring the wire doesn't move may last for a bit, but eventually vibrations will cause it to fail again.. potentially more catastrophically.

If this is a specific part, take a picture and post it here. Then we can help.

Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate it. I think I’ve narrowed down the problematic area and you can see the zip tie in my attachment. I’m not even 100% sure what it’s called. I believe this is the replacement (also attached). just trying to confirm.

Could splice the new wires in between the connectors. Problem is it could be the connector itself. Rare chance but you could remove the plug see if there is any corrosion etc. then put some dielectric grease in the plug and hook it back up. I’d try that first, if no luck I’d order a replacement part, much better then splicing in a new wire in this instance.

Thank you so much for your reply! Wiring makes me feel helpless LOL. Do you mind me asking what this part is called? I posted an attachment of the replacement I’m finding. Just want to triple check as the wiring color is different (yes, that’s how little knowledge I have lol). Thank you in advance!

I’m not sure from the pictures. I’d recommend unplugging the existing harness then you’ll be able to see if they look the same.

Thank you for your help! Unfortunately I’d have to order online or pay a little more at the dealer to receive it next day. Might just make the trip and bite the bullet 😬🫣

To my slightly trained, nearsighted eyes, they don't match. Your's has the male part of the upper latching mechanism on the end. The pictured one has the female end.

Added: Went and looked at Quadratec website. Did you catch this part of the ad?

ETA: Went to the MOPAR parts website and confirmed. This does not fit Jeep Wranglers. Below is the link for the part number on the one you're looking at. Having issues finding the right one, but gimme an hour. ;)

You are amazing! Thank you so much! This wiring stuff is really giving my researching skills a run for my money. The dealership was able to get that wiring in for me tomorrow IF it fit, but they weren’t much help in determining if it was a match. The ad name also is tricky! It says fits 07-18 wrangler JKs, but when I put in my exact model to check fit, says it’s not a match 🙄

What is your year and model. It'll help us locate it.

Worst case, have a tech replace the wiring in your current one. All it takes is good eyes, common sense and the proper plug connector pins. I've done it more than once in my career on various powersports toys due to unavailability of parts.

Thank you so much! It really might almost be worth having them take a look, although I try to do as much of what I can by myself.

It’s a 2010 wrangler JK sport.

HAH! Figured it out. The harness is part of the cooling fan assembly and only sold that way. Check the pics in the attached link.

$129 and you get the whole kit and caboodle.
Are you an angel? Am I able to virtually send you a beer?

The original green wiring I was looking at was under $100 on quadratec as well as most other websites, and the dealer was able to get it tomorrow for $170. Was going to bite the bullet just to have it up and running. $130 and have an entire new assembly? Seems worth it.

Luckily in stock near home, so I should be good to drive with my zip tie to autozone and pick up the parts. Will update as soon as I replace. Thank you so much again, truly!

We joke in my house and say my neighbors probably think we have a “creeper Jeep.” Always driving around in circles, hanging out the window, testing or listening to SOMETHING 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

Nah, just a grizzled , broken down, old retired tech who figured out the parts systems a long time ago. Some days, it's actually worth it. 🤣
I have to say, since having my Jeep I’ve learned so much just researching and reading. Of course, also on threads like this one. But you don’t know about a problem until you have the problem! 🤣

Well, I replaced the fan with the exact link you sent me and so far so good! 🤞🏻 I’m a little weary as last time it took 3 more days of driving to overheat again after replacing the thermostat, but I suspect the fan was trying to hang on to its last life. I’m thinking it had to be the fan though because my fan was constantly coming on SO LOUD. This one is sooooooo quiet. Almost as if the old one was working overdrive. I thank you again for all of your help! Attachment is my favorite sight all week! 😎
