Why is it necessary to put the key in the aux/unlock position when towing my 2012 jeep JK? The steering wheel doesn't lock when the key is in the lock position or even removed.

It's a precautionary technique. If I remember it right, at a certain degree of wheel tilt position, the wheel will lock without the key in it.
