Tack-welded u-joint

Has anybody ever come across a front left axle joint with one cap tack welded? Trying to figure out the purpose. Clips are in place and aside from being ready to replace o don't see anything else out of the ordinary? Field repair? Hooman incompetance? Just curious, really.

Yeah i thought it must've been some on-the-fly fix. The clip was in place but it popped out way to easy. Basically just pulled it off with my fingernail. I was replacing anyway, so not an issue. Thanks for the input
