Hello! I’m new to the forums and just looking for some help and little bit of advice. I’ve search google and other forums for this problem I’m having. I recently replaced the steering gear box and drained the power steering pump and after installing the power steering box I replenished the fluids for the power steering pump before moving the vehicle. Everything worked great. Next day the power steering pump went out. Just wondering if it’s my luck or installation of the gearbox Improperly caused this. Thanks for taking the time to read this and give your advice.

Are we talking about the power steering unit or the steering gearbox?

How do you know it went out for sure?

Power Steering unit, I’m 100% positive it’s not working, since the steering wheel is like a 100lb brick to move back and forth, unless your moving and turning at the same time which makes it a little easier. Or is there anything else that could cause this issue? Thanks. @Chris

Did you bleed the air out of the system when you filled it back up? Is there still fluid in the reservoir?

When you bleed it did you turn the wheel back and forth until it hit the stops each direction? I'm not saying you don't know how to do it but you didn't really say how you did it.

If the pump is working you should see fluid moving in the reservoir, jack the front axle up so the wheels are off the ground and have someone watch in the reservoir to see if fluid moves while turning the wheel back and forth.

X2. Try this and let us know the result.

I'm having a hard time believing a new pump is bad. Not to say it can't happen, but I'd want to rule this out 100% before jumping to conclusions.

I'm wondering if there could have been some metal shavings or dirt in the new gearbox and worked it's way to the PS pump and maybe stuck the relief valve open.

@Chris @BLACKJKU Sorry for the long wait, had alot going on with this Pandemic situation going on. But I @BLACKJKU with his advice of lifting the tires off the ground and turning the wheels fixed my issue and I haven't had any problems since. I must have had an air bubble in the line. Thanks again for the help.

Glad to hear that! Thanks for the update, and stay healthy / safe!
