Oil filter housing spring exploded

The valve housing thing inside the tube exploded today of course. Trying to fish the bottom out but I think it belongs to the housing now.

I've researched and the dorman bypass valve seems to be the only replacement outside buying the entire housing to replace, but that would still leave me with an awful part. I heard I can replace this cooler with one from a 2013+ that doesn't use this design? I have yet to find info on if this works so I came to ask.

The Dorman bypass valve is indeed a popular choice for replacement, and many users have had good experiences with it. As for replacing your old cooler with one from a 2013+ model, it should work just fine since you've got a Pentastar engine in your 2012 so I don't foresee any issues.
