I have a couple of symptoms

Bought the jeep brand new in 2014 and the cluster said “key in ignition” even when it wasn’t. The dealer fixed it before I took it home. Everything has been fine until recently.

Ive had the jeep in and out of a shop recently tracking down an oil leak. So other people have been using the key and ignition.

The first symptom was the keyless entry wasn’t unlocking the doors some mornings. I would have to unlock with the key which would set off the alarm then I could hit the fob to unlock and turn off the alarm. The remote start was also intermittent.

I noticed the ding or chime when the keys are left in the ignition or you aren’t wearing your seatbelt also works intermittently. However, The dash cluster is accurate about reporting the key in ignition.

Are these related to each other? If I leave the keys in the ignition I can’t unlock with the fob. I am thinking there is a switch in the ignition that activate the dinger but not the key in ignition warning.

The fact that the chime and keyless entry issues occurred after your visits to the shop for the oil leak could suggest that something was inadvertently affected during those repairs. Here are a few things you might want to check or consider:

Ignition Switch: As you mentioned, there could be a faulty or worn ignition switch. Some symptoms, like the intermittent chime and keyless entry not functioning correctly, may point to an issue with the switch not consistently recognizing whether the key is present or not.

Body Control Module (BCM): The BCM controls various electronic functions in your Jeep, including the chimes and keyless entry. If there’s an issue with the BCM, it could lead to intermittent functionality. A diagnostic scan might reveal any trouble codes related to this.

Wiring or Connections: Given that multiple systems are affected, inspecting the wiring and connections around the ignition switch and BCM for any loose or damaged wires might be a good idea.

Fob Battery: Although it sounds like a long shot, it's worth checking the battery in your key fob if the keyless entry is also acting up.

Software Update/Reprogramming: Sometimes, electronic components can require a software update or reprogramming, especially after service work. It might be worth asking the dealer if there have been any updates or recalls related to your issue.

Since you've already had the Jeep serviced, it might be worth returning to the shop that worked on it and explaining the new symptoms. They may have insights or suggestions given the recent service history. Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted out soon!
