Is this a factory Rubicon transfer case?

Hey there, my question pertains to identifying if my 2012 Rubicon has a 4:1 Rocktrac. My part number is correct for a RockTrac, 52123503AA and the build sheet for the vin says 4:1 rocktrac, but the ratio on the stamp is 2:72. I’m hoping that it’s that ratio on the tag is just incorrect. I noticed that my tag also has a number followed by 110512-JEEP2. I will be using this Jeep for rockcrawling. Did I buy a Rubicon that was altered? Please help!

What you have there is not a Rubicon transfer case.

If you have an actual Rubicon model, this means someone replaced your stock Rubicon transfer case with one from a non-Rubicon model.

Damn... that really sucks to find out. Sorry for the bad news :(

If I had to guess, someone blew up the old transfer case (or it just failed) and was too cheap (or stupid) to buy the correct replacement.

But part number on that tag 52123503AA is correct for a Rock Trac. What is more likely to be incorrectly stamped, the part number or the ratio?

This is puzzling indeed. That part number is indeed correct for a Rock Trac, but the ratio is not.

Here is what a Rubicon transfer case looks like:

Does yours look like this?

I want to say yes, but they look so different on the ground than under the Jeep. My brother in law has a 2012 JKUR and the part number is the same as his and it looks the same.

The other thing that is weird is the serial number 110512-JEEP2. I haven't seen that on any other rubicons that I have compared to. Could that be some correction for the tag that hopefully indicates it is a 4:1? I don't know if I should be sad or angry. I just put $9K into new gears and a RE lift.

Here are photos of my brothers and mine. I know the photos aren’t the best but I verified they have the same ASS’Y NO 52103503AA and look the same to me. I just don’t see why the tag would have the right ASS’Y NO, but the incorrect ratio stamp. If it was changed to the standard the NP 241 ASS’Y NO.

Maybe your unit is a rebuilt TC?
On to a gravel road, or some dirt, drive at a steady RPM in 1st & 4Hi, then repeat in 1st & 4Lo. Compare the 2 speeds to verify that you at least have the correct gear ratio?

Yep, that would be worth trying. If you truly have a Rubicon transfer case with 4.1, it should crawl at very, very low speeds. Does it?

If you looked at your t-case right behind where it bolts to the trans see if it has the big flange with quite a few bolts screwed into it, no other t-case that i've ever seen looks like that.

Thanks for the input! I did a crawl test and it does crawl pretty damn slow. I will take it to a hill later to put it through some tests. I will get under and look at it later today and check for the flange. I'm hoping that it was just a rebuilt 52103503AA case and they stamped the ratio incorrectly. That would make that strange -JEEP2 after the serial number make sense.

Here are some more photos from under and above the t-case.
Is this the flange you were referring to? Also the notice the ridge web on top. That isn’t indicative of a standard wrangler transfer case.

Yes it has the flange I was talking about so you have the Rocktrac like what's shown in the pictures.

Thanks for the reassurance! I thought so, but the272 stamping in the ratio section on the tag freaked me out. Has anyone ever seen an incorrect ratio stamp before and also this strange serial ID (110512-JEEP2)?
