Do I need to upgrade my tire carrier with a 33" tire?

I just ordered new tires and wheels, 33" tires on 18's, my jeep is completely stock. Do I need to upgrade my tire carrier and bumper?

I wouldn't think so. I'm no expert, but my willys edition came factory with 32" mud terrains, and the spare mounted on the stock carrier. I wouldn't think a 33 on an 18 would be much different. Did you order steel wheels or alloys?

Be my guest

I've upgraded our tires about 6 months ago to the Nitto ridge grapplers 34'' inch and mounted these on the rear spare tire carrier. However I can tell that the 17'' reproduction hard rock wheels and the 34'' nitto are straining the carrier or the tailgate hinges. So one can either replace the hinges with something a bit more durable or purchase a swing out carrier which was designed to larger tires. We're opting for the swing out in a few months and I'll post the installation. So a 33'' inch tire should not be an issue unless the tire is extremely wide and on a very wide rim.

Should be fine unless it's a heavy 33 on an older rig... heavy wheeling amplifies wear on rear door and hinges. If your daily driving you should be fine

The limit as set by the factory is 33's and this is due to clearance on the third light. I was able to sneak in a set of 34'' but it's extremely tight. Then there's the issue with the wheels offset/backspacing. Although 33's is acceptable, if the wheel's offset is beyond +10 you may have to upgrade the spare mount attached to the tailgate. We elected to upgrade the tailgate hinges to the Moreryde setup. Just something to consider.

You may need to upgrade the hinges eventually, but that is no matter what you do. The stock tires are 32.2" or so, so a 33" isn't that big of a bump. There is no reason to upgrade.

Take upgrades slow. Don't make changes before you need to. A stock jeep is still very capable.
