Just got a used JK Sahara. I checked the coolant and thought it looked rusty, but after sticking a straw in to inspect it, it seems fine. Is this normal, or do I have a rust issue?

That looks normal but depends on the year of your JK.

That's exactly what mine looks like and I just replaced the T-stat the other day. However, if you were to disconnect the upper radiator hose at the T-stat, you see the true color of the coolant, most likely an orange color.
Not all coolant is green these days, and that isn't the scary part. If you mix the old type and the new type they basically form jello. Coolant blocking, engine overheating, jello.
Before you add any for any reason, know what is in there.
Or be like me and just add the universal stuff, thus eliminating the problem completely. The universal stuff can be added to either type and be fine. The isn't any disadvantage. My buddy who runs a shop only stocks it this way.

Thanks y'all. I knew it should be orange or maybe a little pink, it just looked so rusty sitting in the radiator that I was worried.
If I decide to flush and refill, should I use OAT, or is universal alright? Are there any advantages to OAT if I'm out of warranty?

Pink is a different type (Some call it lifetime ) and if you mix types they will turn to gel. I have pink in mine as well.
Until you have correct replacement type, if you need to do any top off, use Distilled water

This may work, buy to me it adds a thing that can go wrong.
If you don't get 100% of the old stuff out, you will cause problems.
Plus if you take it into a shop and they add based on year and what the manufacturer says is supposed to be in there then you have problems. switching just seems like a bad idea.
