Advice needed with check engine light

It could be a wire or connector problem also. Can't think which side the no 2 is but there have been issues with the harness the way it wraps around to the right side.

no. 2 is front drivers side. I plan to get a new plug for the injector as well and splice that in if the wires are flaky there. I will inspect the rest of the harness and probably re-wrap and re-tape it before reassembly. Question - should I replace all 6 injectors at the same time, or is replacing one OK? I really feel like it's going to be the wiring, but i'd hate to get it all put back together only to have the same code come back and have to do it again to replace the injector.

Most will just replace the faulty one, even heard of Dealers doing the same. If it was mine and had high miles might consider doing all of them. I'm not sure if a non OEM injector will cause any CEL's or not on these picky Jeeps.

If one injector went bad the other will follow soon or at some point I would replace all of them but that's just my thinking.

well, the only open auto store today (napa was closed) that had any only had one - so that answered that. It is a remanufactured OEM injector though - identical to the others so that's good. I pulled off the top! the injectors all ohmed out at about 12.2 ohms - even the suspected bad one. I replaced it anyway and put new o-rings on all of them. I dropped one of the injector retaining clips somewhere in the engine bay - not into the inlet manifold, fortunately, but I can't find it. it's dark now, but tomorrow I will start by looking for that or I might have to try to find one to buy. (just checked online - and O'Reilly near me says they have one in stock and they're open tomorrow!) Then I will start putting it back together. i will very carefully go over the harness that feeds the injectors to see if there is any flaky wiring, but looking at it today, nothing really stood out. I will unwrap it a bit to inspect more carefully, but I'm not convinced I'll find anything there.

There is some oil leaking somewhere near the driver's side front of the engine around the head or valve cover or maybe the front seal sort of under where the alternator is, in front of cylinder no 2 plug area. Where is that likely coming from? I have some new valve cover gaskets but no inlet/head gasket. i will probably ignore this for now...or at least spray it down with carb cleaner and then come back and see if I can tell where it's coming from.

I took it apart and I got it back together again! The 8mm bolts for the EGR valve pipe down at the EGR valve were so corroded it was hard to get a socket on them, so I ended up having to pull up on the pipe and slide the inlet plenum out from under it. Other than that, all went pretty well. I got the new fuel rail clips and put them on. I lubed the o-rings on the injectors with dielectric grease to get them to slide in better. I also inspected the wiring harness and replaced missing tape and corrugated sleeving that had perished, but the wiring itself looked ok - nothing melted or bare. Once all back together I crossed my fingers and fired it up - no codes again, and it worked great on the test drive...we'll see if that continues to be the case. Intermittent problems suck, so I hope I have it figured out.

Next project is to replace the LED lights I put in with standard glass headlights - my wife does not like the look of the "too modern" LED lights with their halos (though I love them, but as she pointed out, it's not my Jeep...).

I noticed today that I seem to be losings some coolant and there is a spot under the car in the driveway, so I think I need to tighten up a hose somewhere...I'll look for that tomorrow. I don't think it's a blown head gasket or anything - no codes for anything like that and no telltale white smoke or anything. I did do a coolant change on it a few months ago (maybe even 6 months?) and maybe I did not tighten something.

I had a coolant leak on my JKU sometime ago and found it was the radiator cap was bad.

Lets hope it's all good this time, you just put in 1 new injector?

thank you - will check that too. was the fluid coming out of the cap itself? I have to return the "core" fuel injector and can pick up a radiator cap then. I just noticed today that the overflow tank was nearly empty and I had just filled it up last weekend.

yes, only one. That is all the store had. I ohmed out all the injectors and they were all at 12.2 ohms, including (sigh) the "bad" one.

I did put on new clips and new o-rings on all of them.

The car is running very very smoothly now with great acceleration. I hope it keeps doing that.

I had coolant drips coming down the side of the radiator tank below the cap. I took a guess on it being the cap since it was 13 years old and no more leak.

You wife should be glad you can fix things.

just wanted to follow up on this thread - a week later and it's running great - very smooth now. About 17.5mpg so far. Better than it was before and no CEL or codes to speak of. Thank you for all lthe help.

Thanks for the update, how about the coolant leak?

I changed the radiator cap, and did not notice that I was missing a lot of coolant last time I checked - I am keeping an eye on it. i will check again today since my wife is back to driving it. If I am missing a lot of coolant in the make up tank again this time, not sure what I will do!

Update - Jeep has been running well but yesterday my wife reported that it starts to run rough at higher RPMs - the opposite of what was happening before! I am thinking that means fuel pump is the culprit. I believe the filter is integral to the pump, so by the time you drop the tank and pull it to inspect, etc. you might as well replace the assy with over 170K...? She is at work now so I have not checked for codes yet - I will move this problem to a separate post once I poke around a bit. I am really hoping it's not a cylinder misfire error again!

I have not seen the problem and so far things have been good as far as I can tell...not sure what happened above. It has not recurred at least not with me in the Jeep, and there are no codes...so good for now.

Maybe it just needed to be driven for a while so the ECM could relearn after installing the new parts.
