I have an 08 Jeep jk, I just bought an 730N RHR out of a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee from ebay and did a install. Plug and play went smooth. It was sold because the back up camera quit working and the seller went aftermarket. I noticed the software is old and would like to update. My question is I get a hdd error when I do the test in engineer mode. I assuming this may be related to the back up camera. Everything else works great am/fm/Sirius plus music off the hdd. The Nav maps are old and I would like to update those as well. Do you all think its safe to update the firmware 2.7 and gracenotes with a hdd error I don't want to brick my new radio.

I just tossed mine as I hate the factory head units. Have you called the dealer just to see what they say? It seems to me you should be fine to update it.

Did updates myself. Ordered the new 2019 ($99) map set which came with the software update. I burned gracenotes myself.
Software 2.1 to 2.7 about 30 minutes from DVD
2013 to 2019 mapset from USB about 40 minutes
gracenote update to 6908 about 30 minutes from DVD
