Transmission Gear Ratios
1st.... 4.46
2nd.... 2.61
3rd.... 1.72
4th.... 1.25
5th.... 1.00
6th.... 0.84
The transfer case has a reduction of 2.72 so
2.7x1.72=4.644 so Low range 3rd is about like 1st in high range.
2.7x1.00=2.7 so low range 5th is about like 2nd in high range.

So what are the considerations for the drive train. Is there any down side to moping along in 5th gear low range as apposed to using 2nd in High range.

With the 2.72:1 transfer case, there are no issues. I have thousands of forestry road miles all done in 4LO, with 3.07s in my old YJ I could hit 60mph in 4LO. Never an issue. It was like driving a Mustang.

With the Rubis 4:1 I believe the manual says do not exceed 15?mph. Have to read mine to confirm.

Going downhill in the mountains 4LO is fabulous since the gears become much closer together making speed control more precise. But going uphill, the wider speed range in each gear might be more comfortable. We would often go up to a lookout in 4HI, 2nd gear.... And come down in 4LO, 3rd gear.

Go here to play with the numbers....
