2 way radios

You sparked memories. Our first ones were Heathkit crystal-based kit radios. And for the youngsters in the forum, kits back then didn't mean plugging things in. It meant breaking out the soldering iron... I don't remember the company name, but we also got kits to make goose down sleeping bags. Sheets of nylon fabric, zippers, and bags of goose down. Messy kit.

I'm so old. Excuse me for a minute. I need to put on sandals and black socks and go yell "GET OFF MY LAWN" at the neighborhood kids.

HEATHKIT! I remember them fondly. They made all the cool stuff. My Grandfather used to build all his stuff in the "shack", which was a washroom cleaned out with a couple of benches and a gutted out tube TV that had shelves filled with code gear and knobs of all sorts. His call was KA6GOU, When he past in 99, I took his call as a "vanity".

My uncle was way into HAM and Heathkit. All his gear was up in their attic... Cool area he had up there. I guess it was his version of a mancave but on the top, instead of the bottom of the house. 😂

HAM's where cutting edge back then, known as amateurs but had some high end gear. Did your uncle have the incessant "Morse code" going in the background? My Grandpa was always asking "did you hear that". I would shake my head yes but really had no clue what morse code was about. Oddly enough, he taught my wife (girlfriend then) to hear code. She never got really good but she could hold her own and tap back some locations once in a while. I tried but could never decipher the sounds and cadence. My hearing was blown by 20yo from air impacts.
