Transmission issue?!

So the other day, I was trying to get up the driveway on ice, went to pop it into four wheel and popped the linkage from the cable on the transfer case. Popped it back on and now it only moves for about 30 seconds and feels like it slips into neutral. I’ve checked the linkage 100x and everything is where it is supposed to be. I can let it sit over night and shifts perfect for about 30 seconds and then right back into neutral. Is this a trans or a transfer case issue?

I wouldn't think it could be the T-Case there's nothing in there to slip.

Have you checked the trans fluid lately?

Yes fluid is fine. Never had a single trans issue before the transfer case linkage popping off. It started doing this the second the link popped

This is a common problem with the wranglers. What happens is the transfer case shift cable pops off the transfer case because the bushing that holds the cable on falls apart you will need to replace the bushing on the cable and then reinstall the cable onto the transfer case shift lever.

The bushing is only a few dollars and is easy to replace all you need to do is crawl under the jeep on the drivers side and find where the cable goes to the transfer case and replace the bushing in the end of the cable then reattach it to the lever on the transfer case.

Have ypu checked the plastic bushing that may have broken and caused the problem to begin with?

Next suggestion is to adjust the linkage. It sounds like it's engaging, but if it pops out, it may not be fully engaging. This will require adjusting the linkage, probably no more than a 1/4" at a time.

Would that be an issue even if I’m underneath the jeep manually pulling the linkage by hand to lock it in?
I think that locking it in is one thing, but keeping it locked in under load is another. The linkage needs to keep it locked in place.

What you might try is getting your JK off the ground, start the engine, crawl under and engage the front xfer case by hand and see what happens. But I really think the linkage needs to be tight enough to hold it. If it's popping out, the linkage isn't tight enough.

I’m reading there is no way to adjust it, and it doesn’t seem to have any slop in it and is incredibly stiff to put it in by hand

I am little confused, are saying the transmission goes into neutral or the transfer case is slipping into neutral? The transfer case would need to pass 4H before reaching neutral and requires a little bit of a shift to the passenger side to hit neutral. If the transfer case is slipping into neutral I’d assume the TC isn’t in the same position as the lever / linkage. I’d remove the linkage make sure the TC is in 2WD position then reattach the linkage. But get it fixed before going off- road or it will be a pain.

the transfer case link popped off, and when this happened the vehicle would not move at all. I replaced the bushing and the issue is still present. The vehicle moves fine for 15 seconds upon start up and then pops itself into a “neutral” no matter what position the trans, or transfer case is in.

If it didn’t happen before the linkage came off I’d suspect when the linkage was put back on the TC wasn’t in the right position. The TC goes from 2H to 4H to neutral then 4L. If everything was reassembled correctly I’m not sure how it could how from 2H to neutral skipping 4H. Unless there is some other issue. Are you sure the linkage at lever inside the jeep under the console also didn’t break?

I am positive, like I said. If I shut off the jeep and turn it back on, it works just fine for 30 seconds. Makes absolutely no sense
