I went with the Brandmotion from Crutchfield. I think it was this one which includes the adapter for the factory radio. I used Jscan for the programming. They were great with troubleshooting a few issues, including a bad adapter harness...

Did he run a leak down test? The primary cylinder head issue is high valve seat recession on the driver's side head. If this is advanced enough to cause an issue the leak-down test would show it.
