I use a good old fashioned Scrub Daddy... the big one, paired with Krud Kutter cleaning liquid. -

Have you checked for any underlying issues with the engine or cooling system? Sometimes, a larger issue can cause repeated thermostat...

Maybe your attempt to remove the electric plug helped make the contact better. If you can take it off with the plug on, shake it back...
