Hi guys. I’m going to use my jk Sport 2dr. for occasional towing of 3-4K. Lbs
This is a backup to an aging Suburban. No speeds over 50mph. No major hills. Stop snd go type driving no highway.

Not interested in regearing but wondering about springs or anything else.

So far

Upgrading the tires to a 33” from stock and installing the Timbrens helper springs in the rear. Anything else ?

I would suggest using air bags instead. What gears are in your Jeep and what transmission?

Also is it a single axle or tandem axle trailer?

Trailer has electric brakes. Single axle rated 5200lbs.

Forgot to mention I will be installing trailer brake controller.

Gearing is stock Auto Sport/Select Trac. Me bad. Don’t know numbers.

pretty sure I have 4:10 gearing. Not interested in re gearing. Just wondering if anything simple besides bigger tires and timbrens or airbags I should look into

If you do have 4.10 gears that will make towing easier, but remember the taller the tire the more rolling resistance. A taller tire will not make towing easier on the light Jeep.

I agree. Going more for wider stance than stock. Their 33’s so just a bit taller and stick out 20mm more or so

If I am not miseducated, most JKs after 2007 have Dana 44s in back, and Dana 30s in front. The Rubicons have 44s fore and aft.

Did you upgrade the gearing? If its a sport, that would be very rare that i would have 4.10s from the factory. 3.73 was a option, but i dont know if 4.10s would be since thats a big selling point for a rubicon.

It was regeared I believe. I bought it used and recall seller telling me this. I use mainly as a backup vehicle so not overly familiar with the gearing

I can actually pick up a used stock Rubicon 2dr locally at a pretty good price. Is the suspension and gearing more suitable for towing on the Rubi? It doesn’t have the OEM tow package which my Sport does.

Towing is a lot more than being able to get a load moving. I see it all the time when people tow campers.
The vehicle might be able to get the load moving, but can it stop it? Does the vehicle weigh enough to bring the load back under control if a gust of wind catches it? What is the actual towing rating of your vehicle? It doesn’t matter if you put bigger springs, better gearing, air bags and or anything else if you get stopped and are overweight. I have a camper that weighs 6800# wet and started towing with a 1500 that was rated to tow 10,500. Every time a semi would pass the wind would push the truck around. If I had my family in the truck, camper hooked up, and a full tank of gas I couldn’t put any weight in the bed due to cargo capacity (taking into account tongue weight).
I went with an f250 and can tow for 8 hours and not feel tired when we stop.
Also if overweight and you get into an accident, you might be in for a fight.

Yes I agree. However, it’s an open trailer towing a boat so wind will be less of an issue than with a large enclosed. Also it has electric brakes and I have a brake controller. And, as mentioned, no major hills, no highway all under 50mph.
