We used to call these running boards. Personally, if they are functional as rock rails, and you aren't planning serious squeezes through narrow, twisty passages all alike, I would keep them.
Agree with this. Keep them if you like the look and they aren't going to get ripped off where you will travel.
 
I'd take them off. They can't take any actual weight and they offer no protection. It all depends on you and what you use your Jeep for though.

If you off-road, they'll take themselves off soon enough. In which case you can replace them with some rock sliders.

Here's a photo of my friend Trudy after her TJ removed it's rock grabber.

If you keep it out of the rocks, those are perfectly functional side steps.
 
Thanks Dog I for sure won't be doing rocks, I will probably be doing some light stuff.
 
All the stock bumpers and side steps on JKs non special editions are just plastic anyway. I recall being really surprised how light it was when removing mine.
