When I take off in first gear I get a bad pop/clunk noise. It is only when I take off then I don’t hear it. And once it was three clunks in a row as I started off in first gear. My husband thinks it may be a U-joint, but I am not so sure. I do think it is in the transfer case and gear shaft, but I can't put my finger on it...?

U-joint is what came to my mind at 1st too. While the Jeep is in 1st gear and on flat ground, have someone push the Jeep to rock it front and back by hand and listen underneath
Block the front wheels and then leave the trans in gear, lift the rear tires off the ground and move a tire back and forth. Have someone look and listen for noise and excess movement in the drive train.
