So, I've never done any rust cleanup or preventive before. Just bought a 2007 wrangler and it has a little surface rust on the undercarriage. I'm currently cleaning with a wire brush and was just wondering, when it came time to paint, how did you all keep the exhaust clean if using aerosol spray. Just mask? I'm not super mechanically inclined, so I don't want to remove it if I don't have to. Thanks for the help!

After you're done wire brushing, what "paint" are you using?

Didn’t do this on my Jeep but I just held up cardboard on an explorer I had. Kept the overspray off. On my gti I just sprayed over the exhaust. It burned off the 1st time I drove it.

I'm using rustoleum undercoating and it has a rubberized finish. I saw some threads about it smelling real bad and possibly catching fire?

Yep, I wouldn't worry about the exhaust.

Fluid Film is pretty good #1 choice, any rust converter in an aerosol can then paint is still better. The rubber undercoat will trap ANY moisture present. Whatever rust is hidden, the now trapped moisture will excell the rusting process. All this will happen while hidden under that pretty rubber. That was my experience with doing what you're doing. Now don't get me wrong, it took a few years to get a soft spot in my frame. It still pissed me off when I thought I did right but only made matters worse.

OK, thanks for the input. I appreciate the help as I was debating what to use and having never done it before! The last thing I want to do is make it worse!
