Hi Jeep People

I need some advice. I got some Projection lights and installed them in the doors of my 2012 JK.

As per the photo. ;) I just did a test with wires direct to the battery to check if it works.

Now - I have been searching and reading and went through 100s of forum posts on related questions. But cannot find an answer.

What I want to happen is, these lights should only switch on when the door opens. So my first thought is okay, in the latch switch wire there must be something I can use to switch this light on, with the "Door Open" event.

I realised that none of the existing wires into the door (power lock, mirrors, window etc) is a constant hot wire.

So my thoughts are to tap into the lighter wire, which is always hot, and run a wire into the door, with a connector to disconnect when I remove the doors.

So I got my wire tester out. Grounded it on the car, switched the car on (not start) and got a light when touching the live on the lighter switch.

So at least I have a power source. So my thinking was that the ground wire for the light, I should tap into the ground wire coming from the latch switch. (For some reason I thought the latch "breaks@ the ground and when door is opened, it completes the circuit)

I tested it. Opened up a gap in the black wire running to that switch, and clippend the tester on there. Touched the lighter wire (door open) and I have light (yeah). But.. then closed the door.. Open Door notification on dash goes away.. but the tester light is still on.. (not so yeah).

Any advise how I can wire these lights.. (thinking of it now, it would be cool to get power to the lights when I unlock the car and open the door. But I guesa that will mean it needs power ALL the time, even with the key out of the ignition.)

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I am not a car expert.. Novice enjoying learning and doing things myself.

(I want to do a writeup on my headunit, and kicker speaker upgrade. And using sound damp sheets, I sound damped my doors inside. Apeaker boxes and sound bar - will get to it)

Cheers

You don’t need a constant hot! You want power when the door is open like your inside overhead lights. Find and tap into the door switch that causes the interior lights to come on.

Thanks. That was my exact first thoughts.. But I am not finding it ;) So yes, obviously the door latch switch "triggers" something.

I used my tester. Grounded it on the car, switched the ignition on with the door open. Then with the tester checked each and every wire inside the door. And not getting a light on the tester on anyone.

This is what made me thinking in the direction of a constant hot. But what you mentioned is what I need.
