I am a "Ham" and a backpacker. Handheld ham radios on the 2 meter band and similar VHF frequencies work over longer distances when using radio repeaters. For safety in remote area where cell service is not reliable, I carry the Garmin InReach mini. This unit gives me two way satellite communication with my family. A certain piece of mind and it bluetooths to my phone for easier navigation.
