What is the most common issue when the gear shifter for an automatic transmission moves freely? Is it more likely that one or both of the bushings broke or could the cable have broken? Has anyone ever heard of the cable ever breaking or the black eye lit that holds the bushing ever breaking....or is it only the bushing? My local dealer wants to charge me $565 to replace the entire cable and I'm feeling as if something just isn't right. Any and all replies are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There has been a couple people that have had the bushings go bad, I think the bushings would before the cable.

Thanks for the replies. From everything I've been able to find online, I agree 100%! Now the big question is, how to prove that the dealership is trying to make me pay for something I didn't need in the first place. I plan to tell them to show me the broken cable......if they can't, GAME ON!

Had to replace the bushing that attaches cable to transmission
Cost $19.
Had to replace cable for transfer case also. So it’s possible the cable broke.
