What is a good mount for a Farm Jack? I wanted to mount it on the tailgate but heard some negative remarks.
I am thinking about mounting it on the hood but seems like it might obstruct my view.
Any recommendations?
 
I have the Smittybuilt Defender rack and you can buy the brackets for your hi-lift. The pic below is of a different variant of the rack on another vehicle, but it mounts the same:

I have an aftermarket tire carrier & mount it there when I take it. If you have room, inside is great to keep the mechanicals from getting gunked up. My preference is not the hood - not so much because of the potential for visual obstruction but just because it's not the most convenient place to retrieve from. I also don't care for it on the top just because I'm one of those low center-of-gravity types. Having a roof rack or transporting stuff up there is great but I don't like doing it on the trails in a 2dr.

There are tons of options out there and everybody has their preference. There are even some that mount to the side that may be an option for you.

DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT mount on your hood. In the event of a accident, the mounts for a hood mounted hi lift jack can fail and it will turn into a deadly weapon. Maybe not for you, but someone else.

You could almost say the same thing for the fender mount:

It's an inconvenience, but I like mine up top. I've been lucky enough not to need it, but it's either up there or mounted somewhere near the spare- the only choices I'd go with.

In my 08 2dr I mounted on the roll bar at the tailgate. Clamps, tap & bolts... few ways to do it. Keeps it as secure as can be and clean. It was trivial $. I'll see if I can find the post I based mine off of.

Here are the verbatim instructions from tdshepard on jkowners:

"Six bucks, not 60. On your rear rollbar you find two weldments (sic). Use 1/2 x 13 bottom tap to tap in threads. On passenger side I used a 1/2" grade 8 bolt and a 90 degree bracket from the uni-strut system. Uni-strut is VERY common. Walk in to any electrical room and you will see the rail and bracket system they use. On the drivers side I cut a piece of 1/2" all thread and made a stud. A wing nut and washers completes that side. Very strong and rattle free."

I do agree with @IndominusHuman regarding having it on the hood. Myself, I don't like having it high on the roll bar either and I certainly don't like it loose wedged behind the front seats like I've seen. In looking tonight, I see a lot of decent options. Just don't spend a crap load of money on it when you don't have to. And make sure you clean & lube it regularly especially if it's mounted externally.
