My wife was in a drive thru last night and called me telling me the jeep (08 jku) was overheating so I told her to shut it off and let it cool. when she started it back up it started smoking and died in the White Castle drive thru. when I got it smelled like burnt wires, and I had it towed to my mechanic. probably not a quick fix.. any known electrical issues with these?

It is a 2008 JK and they have the highest electrical issues within the 10 year span model - so it could be "a lot" of things.

There's a ton of known electrical issues with them, especially the 2008 year That being said, there's so many things it could be. See what the mechanic says and report back to us with his findings 
Thankfully only the alternator. and is covered by our aftermarket warranty

Wait a minute, it overheats because of a bad alternator that's concerning!
Maybe I misunderstood - overheating and smell burnt probably is the alternator getting toast?
It didn't overheat my wife thought it was. apparently can't tell the difference between the smell of antifreeze and burning wires
