Cross country trip: Wheel and tire question

I have a 2008 JK with a 4.5 inch lift kit currently running 315/75/R16 tires. I have a set of 17 inch JEEP rims and want to go with a more of a taller tire not as wide for my cross country trip. When I get out to Cali I still would like to be able to do off roading and trails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For mostly on-road with occasional off-road use, I would personally go with a Goodyear Duratrac or a BFG KO2. Both are excellent All Terrain tires that I have used in just about every terrain possible, and they perform exceptional in everything but deep mud and jagged rocks.
