Hey Jeepers! I replaced my Kenwood DDX8905S stereo. Also have an under-the-dash Alpine Amp KTP-445U. The DDX kept randomly powered down. The only fix I could find was to disconnect the battery/reconnect which hard booted the stereo then it worked fine. Very irritating. I had an Alpine i509 WRA JK stereo installed thinking like mfgd components would be more compatible eliminating this prob. Several weeks later, the i509 didn't power up at start (only happened a few times). I brought it to my installer and he explained the amp, being under the dash, was getting to hot (very little flow of air to keep cool). He would've installed the amp under driver seat with much better air flow and cooling. The amp doesn't power up to protect itself in lew of overheating. Once cooled down, all will be good to go. Now, there have been a few instances where, in warm weather sitting in the sun at work, the cabin gets very hot and the radio doesn't power up. Oddly enough, the Kicker subwoofer is playing. Installer says this is normal because of being on differect circuits. But when he turned the radio off then immediately powered it up, it played again like normal. I had the amp installed under the dash because I read that this was the best place.

Here are my questions: Do amps like mine have internal protection that turns itself off to prevent overheating?
Would it be necessary to relocate the amp to under the seat for more effective cooling and air flow?

I gave as much info as I could. The installer is the best I've had and not second-guessing him. I'm just doing this for another point of view.

Thx Jeepers!!

Many aftermarket amps have overheating protection. I have an amp enclosed in a custom box with a plexiglass window. To keep the amp cool, I installed 2, 12v computer fans. 1 fan blows into the box and 1 fan sucks the air out. I also have the amp mounted with 1/2" spacers so the air can flow over the whole amp. Overkill? Maybe but my amp never overheated during a DB drag.

I didn't know cooling could be this involved or even this involved. Not sure what it woukd take to incorporate a cooling unit in my tiny 2dr. Thanks for your reply!!
