My rear transfer case is grinding terribly.

Your transfer case or your rear axle? Doesn't really matter they are probably ruined if you have to put the Jeep in 4x4 just to make it move.
If it's your rear axle have you checked to see if it could be your brakes in the rear froze up and the pads are down to the metal?

When you put it in gear does the rear drive shaft turn? If so it's most likely something to do with the rear end.
Rear transfer case? You mean the rear differential? Give us as much info as you can so we can help as best we can.
