What works for mud is about as far as what works for snow as you can get. That being said, it also depends a lot on what kind of mud, and especially what kind of snow. I avoid mud, so not high on my priority list. Snow I love, and a dedicated snow tire is the way to go in almost all situations, especially here in the east. I've driven in up to 2' of (relatively fresh) snow with no problems using my Winterforce snows. I put Yokahamas on my jeep because they are great all around, pretty good in snow, and I can run them all year. When I decide to go beyond the 255/75-17's I'll go more aggressive, and run the Winterforce on stock wheels in the winter. Sloppy, wet snow is always a problem when it gets more than about 15" thick over a solid base. Then a WELL sipped, soft mud tire may float you better, but I've never been there.
