Oil shortages

This is not a political thread so please keep that elsewhere.

The US produces the majority of the oil used in the US for gasoline and diesel. However, a large amount of the base oils that are used to make motor oil come from the Middle East. That source is off line now. So, price increases are coming first. Shortages will come next. The smallest segment of the motor oil world is DIY. So, whatever oil is being produced, will go to shops and manufacturers with whatever is left going to store shelves.

Based on that, oil will very likely become more difficult to get for awhile. I’d recommend stocking 1-2 years worth of oil for your Jeeps (and any other vehicles and equipment you own). It’s available at the moment but it’s not going to last.

Not trying to panic anyone. But, NOW is the time to stock some. Once shortages appear on the shelves, that’s when panic will set in. Shortages ARE coming. No idea how long those shortages will last. My best guess is 1-2 years but that’s my uneducated guess. I personally have stocked approximately 3 years worth.

That's all well and good but I can't eat oil. Stocking up on several years worth of motor oil is hundreds of dollars that can go towards other necessities.

I don't find anything wrong with the prepper mindset but like anything else, you have to be already well off to do it.

I have 3 vehicles, a tractor, and a few ATVs. Also a few generators. They all take oil. I have 3 years worth. Cost me maybe $300-400. And, I’ll use it eventually regardless. Not a big expense especially for an owner of a Just Empty Every Pocket. We’ve all spent more on parts and gadgets for our Jeeps.

Stock up….don’t stock up….doesn’t matter to me. If you don’t, plan to join the rest of the people complaining in a few months that they can’t find oil.
