Best way to fix the defroster tab that detached from the rear glass

image.jpg

Bought a used 2013 JKU and as the season is changing I noticed that the rear window defroster didn’t work. 2 garages said it was the lines in the window since power was going to the defroster.

Dealer suggested that Safelite may have a product that reconnects the lines with the “paint”. Anyone have experience with this?

Also I found a used/damaged 2013 hard top that I think I can take the rear glass off and put it on mine. Are those hard tops interchangeable? Is the glass the same? Anyone else try this?

Seems like several options other than a $934 new glass from the dealer plus labor if I can’t do it myself.

Thanks for any help

Mine fell off just out of warranty. The winters here are brutal, we are in a snow belt. Great for skiing and snowmobiling. I have learned to live with out it for the last 8 years. Just saying.

I've tried soldering mine back on as some videos suggested. It's not happening. The entire window is a heatsink. I'm going to try the permatex adhesive. I'll let you all know how that works. I tried calling the local satellite shop, couldn't get past the automated answering machine to speak with a warm body

So I called an auto glass shop and they said they don't reconnect the wire to the glass they said that they replace the window. The wire comes on the new glass and they just plug it in.

So since I'm paying for glass replacement in my insurance policy I called my insurance company and they are going g to replace the rear window at no charge to me.
Oxyacetylene torch maybe?

Please don't anyone think I was seriously suggesting that...
Trust me the thought has crossed my mind to use a bernzomatic torch

If you can speak to a warm body at safelite and not their computer they will tell you that they just replace the entire window. The new window comes with the wires attached.

Permatex makes a kit with an adhesive that conduct electricity to stick the button on the window and also come with the paint to repair the lin
So my insurance company basically said that unless the glass is broken they cannot and will not replace the window because of the rear window defroster, so I purchased the permatex to repair it followed the instructions and we shall see how it works it said to give it 24 hours before you use the rear window defroster. Time will tell, I will update again after I use it.

You can fix that with a spark plug...

I just did the same today. Will report back as well. Curious if it works and if so why more people haven’t heard of it.

I've tried the permatex and can say that it is a waste of money. The first time it worked for a bit, but the second time it didn't work at all. I've been told about the following, and that it works much better, though I've not tried it. I'm tempted to replace part of the line with something like from the video so a soldering iron can be used.

Thanks for the info. If the permatex doesn't work I'll go to that. I put it on already.

Now this only works for a two door with the back (what's the point of them) seats removed. And from 12yr of experience, and not below -20C. Aim the chest vents straight back fan on high. If you have a doggy back there, FUBAR.

Tried the Permatex. Garbage. Almost all of the paint peeled off when I took the masking tape off. Without a continuous line the defroster won’t work (I left my soft top on so I haven’t tried the defroster on the hard top yet). Feel like Safelite is my next call - or a local glass guy who owns a Jeep. Take care of the brotherhood.

So far min is still stuck to the glass just fine. I haven't needed it since I used the permatex. Time will tell.
