New to the whole JK world...even so, I'm fairly certain these modifications aren't great...something appears to be missing in the 1st and 2nd pics, against the firewall...the 3rd pic appears to be a jerry-rigged thermostat, controlling the radiator fan, and the 4th is obviously a bunch of extra wiring run straight to the battery...any and all advice is greatly welcome...I would like to sort everything back to stock if I can...but not sure where to begin

lol what kinda mods we talking about? if it's one of those sketchy intake manifolds or some knockoff turbo setup then yeah i'd be concerned. seen too many guys bolt random stuff on and wonder why their jeep runs like trash.

what's actually in there? if it's something half-ass installed that could be your problem right there. sometimes it's not the part, it's how it got bolted up. mine runs solid because i didn't cheap out on the install, you know?

Whoa...whoever owned your JK before you did some seriously shoddy work to that thing. This is the sort of stuff that makes run away from vehicles before buying them!

All kind of mentioned in the original post, but there appears to be something missing in the first 2 pics, and the 3rd pic shows some jerry rigged variable electric thermostat presumably running the fan, and the last pic is just for laughs, because I can tell where the extra wires go...

You have way more problems than the wiring I bet. look at the double hose clamped radiator hose (not to mention the silicone), looks like a mismatch of sizes. There will be a lot of gremlins pop up on this rig. What do you think went through the firewall hole?

Yeah, there very well could be some gremlins...that's why I'm here, asking questions, so I can sort them, and as mentioned, hopefully try to put things back to stock.

The second hose clamp and silicone appears to be holding the thermocouple from the goofy, cobbled-in, adjustable thermostat, in place against the radiator hose, as near as I can tell...

The extra wiring (at first glance) goes to the above mentioned thermostat, and the aftermarket fog lights, poorly wired in...

In regards to the firewall hole, if I had a clue what is supposed to be there, I wouldn't have called it "something appears to be missing"...I posted this, hoping for some insight 😉

I am not certain but that firewall hole looks like a prior owner ran something through there but removed it before selling.

The large cast metal bracket the hole passes through makes me think otherwise...like it's something OEM that's no longer there...

🤷‍♂️

The jagged hole and silicone around it suggest something installed by a previous owner to me. Unfortunately I don’t own an early JK with the 3.8. Also this is a right hand drive right? They exist here in the US but aren’t exactly common.

The hole isn't jagged...the sloppy silicone around it makes it appear that way...

And yes, RHD here in Australia 😉

I have a LHD 2010 in the shop right now but should have it back early next week (ball joints). I will take some pictures and post then. You might want to check if there are any local Aussie Jeep clubs that would likely have RHD JK models and see if they can help. Good luck!

So something was siliconed in there. Factory didn’t. So, someone did. What’s behind it in on the inside? I’d be looking for clues there as well.

The questionable wiring at the battery also leads me to suspect some wires had been running inside the cabin likely through this hole. Could be any number of things.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that hole the moment though. I’d trace all those wires to see where they are running to.
