New to me "08 Sahara 4 door. Tried to go on an easy offroad trail yesterday but even it was too rough for my wifes back. I will also be using this as my daily driver. Stock suspension and shocks at this time. Talking to a local offroad shop, they are suggesting new springs, shocks, and maybe other componenents (we were just ballparking stuff so did not get a parts list). Basic suspension upgrade and 2.5" lift. Is that the direction to go for this vehicle? Don't plan on modding this one any more as I would like a Rubicon anyway. That brings me to the next part of my question, would upgrading to a newer (and if so, what year) Rubicon also greatly improve my ride?

No. It's a Wrangler. Lifting it will not make it stop riding like a Wrangler. Neither will buying a different year.
Yes what @Dirty Dog said. I will say that the wife’s Sahara rode a little better then my Rubi HR. Both are 2015, one an auto and one a manual. From what I understand the Sahara does have a different set of shocks then the others. We installed a lift on each which actually seems to have improved the ride.
