I just got a quote from a local shop to put an Aussie locker in the front. Would normally have done it myself but too close to the 9/15 & 10/15 tax dates for me to get time. The quote I got was for $1451.15 - I thought that was a touch high. I was expecting about $1150 plus or minus a touch.

$319.99 for the locker - I've seen them higher and lower so good there.

But he's probably selling you the Locker for $500, those Lockers are simple to install. I've done a couple of the Lunchbox D60 Lockers and maybe 2 hours of your time and you'd have less then $500 in the whole thing.
Seems crazy high to me...

$700 for labor, assuming ~$125/hr, comes to 5.5 hours of work. You can rebuild the entire D30 in 5 hours, including new gears and differential. Popping in an Aussie should be 2 hours max, and that's if he is taking his time.
Shop supplies should be limited to basic shop charges (my dad used to have $75 min for stuff like this) and then would add whatever else was used (gasket, 2 quarts of oil, etc.).
Anything more than $900 and I would absolutely find a quiet afternoon and bang it out myself...

On the Estimate Sheet he had the locker line itemed at $319.99. Of course he may have put all his profit and markup in the drain/dispose/refill fee.
I hit "Decline" on their estimate they sent me and they responded and then asked if they could call me. The fluids is where I had most of my heartburn. In my head I thought I could do it in about 3 hrs and I don't have a lift, I'm sure I'm missing some make it easier tools and I don't do it everyday but I thought 5.5-6hrs was a bit much. He kept stressing there was labor involved in the drain/dispose/refill fee which I agreed but my thought was that labor should be included in your LABOR line item that I already feel is inflated.
The only reason I haven't tackled it myself is from Jan-May 15 and Jul 15 thru Oct 31 I average about 108 billable hours per week plus another 12-15 hrs of admin time. Could I squeeze 3-4 hours in somewhere? Yes I probably could. My problem is this is my daily driver as well and if I hit an issue I'm stuck. I installed my lift kit last year and I set aside a weekend thinking I'd get it done on Saturday and play on Sunday. I broke a stud trying to get it free and everything closed on Saturday night and Sunday and not having a shop with spare parts on hand I was stuck.
It put us in a bad spot because my wife had to drive me to the office thru horrible morning traffic 51 miles one way and get back to get kids to school and she teaches and then pick me up that evening. Burned child fears the fire and it makes me nervy to take on something now. LOL!
