Because we couldn't find this same issue anywhere, I figured I would let everyone know the issue and fix......This is kind of a long story but I'll try to be as quick as possible....We bought a Jeep (actually my son) from Carmax. During the test drive, I put it into 4W low, tried to switch to 1st then 2nd. After a lot of trying, it went into 2nd gear but then we were in limp mode and I couldn't get it out. We asked to look for a different one but of course the sales guy said they would fix it. My son liked the Jeep so he decided to wait for it.
Carmax took it to Jeep who just cleared the codes and reprogrammed the PCM. It worked....for the test drive but after adding lift, 33's, etc., etc., we took it off road and after 10 minutes in 4W high, it did the same thing.
Back to Carmax, back to Jeep, still broken (re-reprogrammed PCM), back to carmax, then to a transmission specialist, still broken, back to carmax, back to a different Jeep (they put on a refurbished transmission), still broken, back to carmax, to a different transmission specialist, still broken, back to carmax, they put on a new transmission cooler, still broken, back to carmax, they took it to Jeeps R Us (Laguna Beach, CA) who figured out in 5 minutes what the issue was. That took over 5 months.
The transmission computer was not programmed correctly. It was sensing that it should be in 3rd gear but stuck in 2nd and going into limp mode. They reprogrammed the transmission computer and it's now fixed.
