What did you do to your JK today?

I got around to installing the D rings on my front bumper. I also ordered vanity plates for both. FUN4MOM & FUN4DAD. I suggested DUCKME & DUCKME2, but what mama wants, mama gets. Those go along with TOY4POP on the Vette.
Other than that, I installed four solar powered Ring cameras outside.

This is not directed at you, DD, but it drives me nuts when I see the Jeep world refer to shackles as "D rings."
First day on a ship in the Navy you'll learn what a shackle is. Never- and I mean never- did we call these "D rings."

I highly recommend seizing the shackles. This will prevent the loss of the pin should the vibrations eventually bounce it loose. You can Google how to seize shackles and choose your preferred method.

Sorry, rant over.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Ha Ha, but if DD said “shackles” 1. Some wouldn’t know what he was talking about. 2. Someone might be wondering where the a shackle goes on a coil spring 😂😂.

We're not in the Navy, and D rings seems to be the more common term. The primary definition of shackle is a device used to restrain a prisoner.

I've never had this happen. The ones I use have rubber washers and isolators to prevent rattles. I mount the D ring, put a screwdriver through the hole in the pin and crank it down. Vibrating loose is possible, I suppose. If I ever have one loosen, I'll put some LockTite on it.
Sorry, rant over.
Go ahead. We all have our things. It makes me nuts when people refer to wheels as rims. A rim is a part of a wheel, but it is never a wheel. Or referring to a magazine as a clip. They're two completely different things. Or "Nos". NOS is Nitrous Oxide Systems. It's a brand, not a chemical. The chemical is Nitrous Oxide, Nitrous, or N2O. Shall I go on? :)

So that's why people call N2O NOS... I always wondered where the extra S came from.

Have to agree with @Anybodyhome.
Growing up doing work with my Dad up at the lake , falling trees , moving logs around always referred as a shackle.
Most def the Navy , Coast Guard , Logging & Ship industry as a whole refers to them as a shackle .
It wasn’t until I entered the Jeep community seen it referred as a D Ring .
And I quote :

I think it’s one of those terms we use which can have multiple meanings depending where your from .
Example :
Shackle as @Dirtydog mentioned is sometimes used in reference to hand cuffs .
In Canada it’s pretty common to refer to wheels as rims . As from what I read on the forum the term Rim is frowned upon .lol

Context matters.
If I'm talking about Jeeps and someone says D ring, I know what they mean.
If I'm talking about SCUBA and someone says D ring, I know what they mean. Similarly, we use shackles in SCUBA for purposes other than restraint, and I know what they mean.
If I'm on a big boat and someone says D ring, I know what they mean.

If you look up shackle in the dictionary, the first definition is a restraint for a prisoner:
a pair of fetters connected together by a chain, used to fasten a prisoner's wrists or ankles together.

If we look up D ring, the primary definition is
a D-shaped, usually metal ring of various sizes, used on clothing or other articles as a closure, a means of securing straps or objects, or a decoration.
And the second is
a D-shaped metal ring used primarily as a lashing point in a tie-down system.
which would seem to reasonably include using them as a lashing point for off roading.

It's become common lots of places. It doesn't mean it's correct. Rims are a vital part of wheels, but by themselves they are useless.

Regarding securing shackles - a zip tie works great and snaps off easy when the shackle is needed. Keeps the local kids from walking by and absconding with them too.

That’s a good idea. I haven’t had any problem with my front 2 disappearing but planning a road trip so will be in a hotel couple nights . Jeep will be venerable overnight in the parking lot so will either remove or zip tie.
Going to the extent of removing my KC’s at the hotel I can see someone stealing those . That’s one drawback when we mod out Jeep’s with quality equipment . It can get targeted .

Before I went off road had to find a 35MM socket for front axle bolt & 12 point 13 MM for the hub/bearing The last store I went to had them . Whew
Would’ve had to order if didn’t find any .

Cowichan Valley. Alternative route to the summit of Hill 60. .it was awesome ! Steep, washed out, very rocky & rough . Was only able to get about 3/4 the way up till I hit deep snow . Probably be clear in a couple weeks .ATTACH=full]124073[/ATTACH]

Waiting on Michigan to warm up enough to paint the old, tired Smitty XRC bumpers. They’re looking well used. Got nearly a quart of good bed-liner paint left over from another project to tidy them up. Scuff the rusty spots with a grinder, sand all over, metal etch primer and coat inside and out. Winch and all lights have to come off.

While I'm under the back, the dangling hitch light wiring will be sheathed and re-routed for protection. I can get the new LED driving lights installed right after.

Maybe middle of the coming week. Forecast for low 70s finally. We haven’t seen warm since coming home over a week ago.

I’ve got a SB XRC Gen 1 rear bumper . Really happy with it .
Had it over a year now with no signs of rust or paint failure .
Bottom of hitch receiver scraped up a bit from a few rather sharp departure angles .Like that it’s there . Protects the rest of rear bumper
