But how do I figure that number when in the shop? I need to get a number for proper shock size.
Compressed - Measure eye-to-eye on the shock mounts. Then add the distance from axle to bump stop. I would add an additional inch to allow for bump stop compression. Or you can order an extended bump stop.
Extended can only really be attained by flexing the Jeep and finding the lowest sag point. A bit of caution, it looks as though you still have stock brake lines. You do not want those to be you limiting factory on the suspension sag, nor your new shocks. Might want to invest in limit straps and brake lines as well.
 
Our offroading doesn't include much rock crawling. Our previous TJ only had 2" lift with 33" KO's. It did the trick for us. There really was only 1 time that we needed a bit more lift.

Honestly, our budget for mods is somewhat limited at this time. Too many other irons in the proverbial fire. At this point I just want to get ROXY squared away.

Technically, no. It has different springs that result in it sitting higher than the other models, but it's not really a lift. And I think most lift kits use the Rubicon as the base, so a 3" lift will result in 3" of lift on a Rubicon, and 4-5" on a Sahara.

Yesterday I measured using the info in the How To post. I also confirmed that the springs DON'T have spacers. And, like many things in life, the existing spring shock combo is completely unknown. Somewhere in the recent past our girl ROXY got her underside coated. The shocks and springs were included in said coating.
Looks like I have 3" lift.
While checking I discovered that the front shock lower mount bushing is MIA.
So I did some research and ordered up some Rough Country shocks 0"-3" lift all around. I thought about goin with the 3.5" +... any thoughts?
That will give you more extension, but you might need to do some adjusting of your bump stops to avoid bottoming out the shocks.

An RTI ramp, but you probably don't have one handy. So park a tire on top of a floor jack. Start raising the tire. If you're raising the passenger front tire, then when the passenger rear tire no longer touches the floor, you're done.

Looks like I have 3" lift.

For a guy with one eye, I judged that pretty well. LOL.

This site needs a multi-quote feature... Xenforo has that capability, so maybe turn it on?

Exactly . It uses stiffer springs . Also the high line
flares makes it look lifted .
I'm using Rubicon suspension . Shocks &
springs . Lifted it about an inch over stock.
Just temporary till in get lift I want .
 
The new shocks showed up yesterday. Much better than the unknown old ones. Thicker shaft and they actually have some life in them. Got the rears installed after straightening out the brackets.

Worked on the passenger front shock yesterday. My year has some funky plastic tray that limits access to the top shock mount. Dont know if this is on all years. It made it more difficult to get to the nut, so I broke out the body saw and trimmed a bunch out. That was the worst part of the job.

Took her for a test ride on the street. MUCH better! Now she actually has shocks that work with the suspension. Before, it was just springs. Rode like a buckboard.
Next test is on the dirt!
