Hi all, I am a newbie to the jeep world. I have a 2014 jk Saraha. I would like your advice on a scanner tool. I am a shade tree mechanic. I also have a ABS / SKID warning light on. I have gift cards from auto zone and advance auto. Thanks in advance for your help.

We're not going to believe you have a JK unless you send us pictures of it.

J-Scan is the best thing to get it will also allow you to make some changes to things.

Autel makes some nice scan tools. i dont know what is your $$$ but the maxiSys 906 is a top scan tool. does almost every thing
you can think of. $1000-1300 i know PRICY but you can make money helping your friends out. dealer gets $100 to scan you can
charge $45 and help pay for. updates can run $200 per year if you wish to keep things up to date. do some research and see!

This is the correct answer. JScan is what you need to get it will take care of 99% of anything you need to do. Its around 50 bucks for everything you will need.

you got to be kidding! $50 bucks than when the next problem shows, you will find your $50 tool wont tell you JACK!

I have this and the J-Scan app. Works better than my buddies $200 scanner! There's nothing I can't do with it.

In my shop I have autel 908 and a launch 431v pro. They do everything you might want to do

The jscan is ok for viewing live data on a Mopar. For a "shade tree mechanic" who wants to work on any other brand or Anything else and it's not very useful. Both of my tools can pair transmissions, reset batteries, bleed brakes, retract e parking brake, code ecu or transmissions, freeze frame data, reprogram keys or tpms etc etc etc on any brand of vehicle.

Just to clarify for the new jeeper that is asking the question about scanners, those two are way too expensive and are for shops, not for the general users of these forums.

As stated, Jscan is a good program, and paired with the above mentioned bluetooth device it will do everything you need. Change tmps stuff, read codes, clear codes, adjust pretty much all computer settings. Many on this site use it.

He/ she also said they were a shade tree mechanic. If anything other than a Mopar comes under the shade of his tree then jscan is useless. But the ones I mentioned can be had for a grand. I had one before I ever built my shop. Jscan is great for someone working on his jeep clearing codes and seeing some live data. Not sure how far it can with bi- directional actuation tests and coding keys/ transmissions/ pcm etc etc though.

I suppose it comes down to how much shade their shade tree casts and if he needs to work on a Toyota/ Honda/ bmw/ Ford/ gm/ etc etc etc at any time. Its up to the Op to decide what his needs are and what he can afford. Not me

Missed that, also i have no idea what a shade tree mechanic is. 🤷‍♂️

But yeah, jscan is limited if you want to use it on other vehicles.

Very commonly used phrase with absolutely no context or meaning. Lol. Generally means they work on a good many vehicles but don't have a shop. Sometimes it means they changed a tire one time under a shade tree. So idk

Thank you for all for all of your responses. I don't have a shop and have limited mechanical ability (hence shade tree mechanic). I do most of the things but still rely on repair facilities.

This is the OBD I have paired with JScan.

And I selected this specifically for my JKU. I'm not going to do any work on my wife's Lexus or her Benz, so I don't need some overpriced toy for my Jeep that'll handle every vehicle in the neighborhood.
The JScan actually does a lot more than I'm capable of working on, however, it does provide me with information I can pass along to the guy who does the work I don't have the necessary skills for.

Sounds like someone is upset they spent over 1k on something that a 50 dollar bill could have done... Look at the responses....let the pride go.
I don't know that pride had anything to do with his response. Maybe. But not with mine. I've made many thousands of dollars with my 1 thousand dollar scan tool. It's updated constantly, annoyingly so. If a 2021 or 2022 comes into my shop today I have access to it. Any brand. Even Bugatti, Lamborghini and Ferrari which I'll likely never get to play with. Ford and BMW both use pretty heavy encryption now. The small companies aren't getting access to their modules. Launch and autel do. And the OP said he was new to jeep (implying they aren't brand loyal) and that they were a mechanic. If all they want to work on is the one jeep, (or Mopar) then jscan is likely the best choice and priced very well. But given the information in the original post and considering what we were given that would be presumptive of us, and the others options weren't prideful, they were directly answering the question thoughtfully with the information given.

Just myself, my parents and my sister have at this point, 3 GM, a Toyota, a hyundai Santa Cruz, 2 subaru, 5 light duty Ford, 3 Mustang, one heavy Ford, one heavy GM, a Ram and a Wrangler. And a new car coming soon because one got hit. Just waiting on insurance. So that's 20 vehicles and jscan can be useful on 10%. The un named vehicle that hasn't been bought....I know I'm covered. Will likely be another Santa Cruz or subaru though. My launch has been used in every one to at least change lighting setup, door unlocking setups, and disable those frigging seat belt chimes. I was given a 100 dollar bill for setting a lexis to open all doors when the proximity key was sensed rather than just the driver door. Several new vehicle have to have a computer to change the brake pads and rotors. Nothing wrong with getting the ins and outs of all the different computers and letting the Op (or future readers) decide what their needs are. I don't care if the op buys what I have or not. I make no money from it. No pride involved.

And besides that, if you don't have a grand to blow then buying a jeep was a bad choice in the first place. That's common knowledge.

I can see your point for justifying your purchase but for most of us DIY repair people something cheaper like the Jscan works just fine.

No doubt. 100% agree. And if your going to work on your Ram and jeep and challenger then I might have given the same above about jscan. Ford guys use Forscan lol. For instance there are several options you have to pay for on a new f150 that are actually on all truck but disabled. You can use forscan and change the values and turn them on. Both j scan and for scan can change vehicle specific things that the big ones can't too, but the big ones can do a lot the others can't. But when take into context what the Original post asked and the info given. Then saying that pride motivated any of the responses seems a bit off
