Regarding towing capacity for my 2” lifted with 33’s auto trans, 2008 unlimited rubicon my manual says the tow limit is 2100kgs. What limits how much I can tow? What would happen if I were to tow 3500kg

Interesting number it gives you. Unlimited are rated at 3500 lbs in the US, and 2100 kgs is a bit more than that. That must be a more marketable number in Oz. 3500 kgs is around 7700 lbs which is over double.

A lift kit doesn't add more towing ability. Towing capacity is based on a number of things, what the body, transmission, engine, and braking can handle, to include a bunch of other stuff. Stopping being another super important part of getting where you are going.

Just do some googling along the lines of "what happens if I exceed my towing capacity". It doesn't matter that most of the stuff is going to be about trucks, because the physics are the same. Trucks are engineered to tow more, while wranglers can tow, but are not engineered around it. This is the best way to be able to see the whys and such from multiple sources and decide if the risks are worth the potential problems.

Let us know your decision.

Thanks for you reply, today I asked the question to a mechanic who knows a bit about tow capacities etc he said that the main difference between say a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Fortuner is the rear suspension. For eg he said that both these cars have identical drive lines and engines yet have different towing capacities and this mainly due to the rear suspension, go figure.
